A good shade works for you all year. It cuts the glare at midday, holds some heat in through January, and gets out of the way when you want the view.

Which shades handle Virginia summers and winters best?
Honeycomb cellular shades. The air pockets insulate in both directions, and the Duette® Architella® line puts a cell inside a cell, which is the best insulation Hunter Douglas makes.
We have kids and a dog. What's safest?
Cordless or motorized. There's nothing hanging down to grab or tangle, and it's what we recommend for any home with young children or pets.
